Hi , 

     If you've been quilting along with me for awhile, you know I'm a proud prewasher. I wash all of my fabric when I buy it, then fold it up wrinkled and organize it on hangers.

     Unfortunately this has always created a lot of frayed threads tying everything up in the wash. I can't believe I put up with that for so long when it's so easy to reduce the fraying with this little trick. See what I'm doing differently in this short video:

     Here's my quilt-making process now - when I buy new fabric, I clip the corners and throw it in the wash. Unless it's a precut fabric smaller than a 12 inch square, I wash everything - fat quarters and fat eighths included. 

     I wash the fabric until I'm sure it's color safe. I do this by throwing in a square of white fabric. If it comes out discolored at all, the washer runs again!

     Once the fabric is color safe, I dry it and fold it up wrinkled on hangers in my studio. Here's another short video on how I organize hundreds of yards efficiently:

     When I'm ready to make a quilt, I can grab any fabrics I like, trusting 100% that they are color safe, and starch and press them to prepare for cutting and piecing.
