Here's my quilt-making process now - when I buy new fabric, I clip the corners and throw it in the wash. Unless it's a precut fabric smaller than a 12 inch square, I wash everything - fat quarters and fat eighths included.
I wash the fabric until I'm sure it's color safe. I do this by throwing in a square of white fabric. If it comes out discolored at all, the washer runs again!
Once the
fabric is color safe, I dry it and fold it up wrinkled on hangers in my studio. Here's another short video on how I organize hundreds of yards efficiently:
