This is a video from the Friendship Quilt Along and I love this combination of free hand, free motion quilting to create the center spiral, and the very structured, straight line echoing in the border.
I hope you can
see the advantage of using a larger quilting machine from this video. With a 21-inch longarm machine I was able to quilt the spiral over that 16 inch quilt block in one pass. That is a lot of creative space to play!
To quilt the border around the block, I rolled the block forward and quilted the upper
section, then rolled it back to quilt the lower section. This is one of the advantages of using a rolling rail frame - its as easy as unlocking and rolling forward and back to get to the next section of the quilt.
