New Machine Quilting Designs

Published: Wed, 09/28/16

Hi ,

I've been digging in deep with walking foot quilting, but this Monday I decided to take a break and share a new free motion quilting design called Goddess Tears.

This beautiful branching design will add flowing texture and open tear drop shapes to your quilts. Goddess Tears looks amazing when quilted in small spaces, and also can be expanded to work in bed quilts too.

In the video I'm quilting this design in a Goddess Face cheater cloth panel so you can see how it works in an applique-type shape.

I posted this new design on Monday and that very evening I got a ping from Instagram with this beautiful photo from ElizabethKRay, shown below. Didn't she do a wonderful job?

Walking Foot Wholecloth?
This week I've been playing with a new pair of camera glasses and designing a wholecloth quilt for my new book on walking foot quilting.

Did I just say walking foot?

Yes, indeed. It is possible to make a wholecloth quilt with your walking foot (though not very common). I set out to design a pretty quilt and filmed the process of how I start with a sketch and keep playing with ideas until the design is just right.

After sharing this video on Wednesday, I received a great question from Travis R on YouTube:

"After you have created a quilt design that you are happy with, what is the best method to transfer your paper design onto your quilt to be quilted?"

This was such a great question, I shared a second video of the computer design process. I snap a picture or scan the drawing into my computer, then draw the design in a computer program using simple copy, paste, and rotation tools to create a symmetrical design.

As you can tell, I love getting your questions and will sometimes even shoot a video just to answer them. Please don't hesitate to ask questions on Youtube, the Free Motion Quilting Project blog, or Facebook.
Speaking of Facebook, we're planning a fun Facebook Live Chat for Thursday, Sept 29th at 7 pm EST.

During this chat I'm going to explore quilting design and share tips for designing your own quilts from scratch. If you're curious about designing your own quilts this is definitely going to be a fun show for you.

This live chat will show up right here on the Leah Day Quilting Page. If you miss it, don't worry, we always post the video to Facebook afterwards so you'll be able to enjoy it anytime.

So that's it for this week. We have so many fun things in progress and I'm having a blast creating this walking foot wholecloth quilt.

Don't forget to take advantage of our sale on the book 365 Free Motion Quilting Designs!

Let's go quilt,

Leah Day
