Quick Walking Foot Quilting?

Published: Thu, 06/01/17

Hi ,

Can walking foot style quilting really be quick? Yes, it definitely can! Even better, it's also a very easy quilting style because your machine and the walking foot does most of the work for you.

This May I've been quilting the Mega Pinwheel Star quilt using only walking foot quilting and three simple designs. I was delighted by how fast the quilting moved through the quilt and super surprised when I finished the entire quilt in less than two weeks.

Now for the even better news: I filmed the entire process and have created a new quilting workshop just for you!

In this quilting workshop I share tips on picking a fast and easy quilting design that will also transform your quilt top with beautiful texture. Together we will learn how to quilt through hardest part of the quilt and manage the bulk and weight while also maintaining a pretty design.

If you're just getting started with quilting, this workshop will get you started on the right foot piecing and quilting a very easy quilt. If you've been quilting for awhile, you'll learn a lot about spacing lines with minimal marking and designing the quilting based on your materials and time.

My goal creating this workshop was to prove that you CAN quilt your own quilts on your home machine, and you can quilt a quick, but beautiful design using your walking foot.

Flower Festival Half Finished
It's also time for a new block for the Machine Quilting Block Party. This month we're going to piece and quilt a beautiful Dainty Dresden Plate created with sixteen pointy petals.

This is the most complex Dresden Plate quilt block we've made so far, but don't worry - it will be very easy and fast to piece together. Be looking for the piecing design next Monday.

Once the Dainty Dresden Plate is pieced we will quilt together with free motion feathers, a simple leaf shape, and either ruler foot or walking foot quilted straight lines.

Since this is our 6th block out of 12, this project is halfway finished! I recently pulled out all of my blocks, plus the sashing and cornerstones Dad and I quilted together, and began connecting the rows of the quilt.
I love how the Flower Festival quilt is coming together! If you've fallen behind on your blocks this month, try to catch up and start connecting the rows together so you don't have a big project to finish at the end of the year.

I've seen so many quilters making terrific progress in our interactive Facebook group. It's wonderful to see your flower blocks each month and how your skills for piecing, applique, and machine quilting are improving each month.

It's never too late to join the Machine Quilting Block Party and begin piecing and quilting with us. Find all of the block patterns shared so far right here.

That's it for this week. I hope you're as excited about the new Walking Foot Quilting Workshop as I am and ready to learn more about walking foot quilting!

Let's go quilt,

Leah Day
