Hi , This week I've been cleaning out my sewing room and found many unfinished quilt projects that would be fun to quilt on for our Sit Down Quilting Sunday posts. This quilt was created with a Building Blocks cheater cloth quilt panel I had printed years ago on Kona Cotton Ultra.
I basted my sixteen block cheater cloth panel with quilters Dream Puff batting and minky fabric on the back to create a super soft and puffy baby quilt.
The upside of thick batting and minky backing is I'll be able to get away with
lots of mistakes. Subtle stitch offs and inconsistent travel stitching will be hidden by the thick pile on the minky fabric.
However, the downside is it will feel a bit harder to move the quilt over the machine. I've found minky fabric tends to grip the machine bed so it really helps to clamp the quilt upright to reduce the weight on the machine.
Remember if you live in the US and you're interested in the machine, be sure to call the company and mention Leah Day told you to say, "Hello my quilting friends" to get a discount on your order. This helps me make more videos and helps you save on your machine or quilting frame!
A Trip Back in Time with Our Past Quilt Alongs |
Josh recently updated the welcome page on our official website, bringing us up to date from 2015 when we first laid out the page. We realized we hadn't shared all of our yearly Quilt Alongs. Our Quilt Alongs are unique because we never suspend them or take them down, and
you can join and work on the project at your leisure.
We're pleased to also announce all of our Quilt Alongs are on sale for half off this week only.
Building Blocks - This was our first monthly quilt along, started January 1st of 2014. This is a fun and
comprehensive beginner quilt, showcasing piecing and free motion quilting 42 beautiful quilt blocks. Remember, we also have Spoonflower "cheater" fabric available if you don't wan to piece the
quilt! Dancing Butterfly - In 2015 we jumped into applique, quilting a beautiful project featuring large butterfly blocks and
20 fun free motion quilting designs. Machine Quilting Block
Party Sunrise Surprise - 2016 was year one of our Machine Quilting Block Party Mystery Quilt Alongs. Instead of offering the entire year's project at once like we did with Building Blocks and Dancing Butterfly, the blocks came out the first day of each month and the finished quilt was a surprise. Sunshine Surprise is a fun Quilt-As-You-Go project. This means the blocks will be pieced, then sandwiched and quilted separately, then put together to create the finished quilt at the very
end.
The finished size of the quilt will be 43 x 58-inches, making it a beautiful, throw sized quilt!
Machine Quilting Block Party Flower Festival - This year's current
Quilt Along with a flower block theme. Our block for this month is Pot of Petunias. Piecing instructions are shared the first Monday of the month followed by quilting on the second Monday. All blocks and year-round patterns are half off their usual purchase price.
Quilting Our Block of the Month |
Speaking of Quilt Alongs, it's time to quilt the Pot of Petunias quilt block with many fun designs: Circles, Microstippling, Stippling, feathers, and Echo Shell.
I decided to stitch my flower block up a notch with extra Microstippling in the flowers.
You don't have to do this of course, but I like to add that little punch of extra texture in a few areas.
I also did this in the center of the Daisy Dresden Plate (Block 4) so by adding it to this block too, the quilting design is nicely balanced through the quilt. Adding dense quilting like this will make that small area a bit stiff, but since the rest of the quilt is quilted on a 1/2-inch scale or
bigger it will still remain soft and cushy.
That's it for this week. I'm happy to be back on schedule for our Wednesday weekly newsletters as the past two weeks the newsletter went out a day or two late. We always try to get these out Wednesday mornings to you!
Let's go quilt,
Leah Day
