Crazy for Walking Foot Quilting

Published: Wed, 01/17/18

Hi ,

Brr! Winter has definitely here and I've been enjoying the season by doing what quilters do best - making more quilts! Just in case you don't have a project in process, here's a few free quilt patterns we've shared over the last year.

The Double Stripe Diamond free pattern came out around Christmastime so you might have missed it. This quilt pattern is perfect for a Valentine's Day quilt!

Among my other nine favorites is our Eclipse quilt, a Color Wheel Dresden Plate, and easy Sixty Slice Quilt.

We still have a few quilting kits for the Heart Medallion Checkerboard quilt. I designed the heart medallion panels for Island Batik so you could quickly fussy cut out the squares and quilt around each medallion to create the quilting design.

Piecing the Rainbow Log Cabin Top
We're diving into the third week of the Machine Quilting Party! We're chugging right along with our Rainbow Log Cabin Quilt and today we're piecing the quilt blocks together to create the finished quilt top.

Learn how to arrange and piece your blocks in long rows in this new quilting video:
Remember, more videos for the Rainbow Log Cabin Quilt come out every Monday, but you can follow along and make this quilt anytime and work at your own pace.

Click Here for all the videos shared so far in our Quilt Along.

You'll also want to layer and baste the quilt top with batting and backing fabric to create the quilt sandwich.

Next week we will begin quilting the layers together as we stitch in the ditch between the quilt blocks.
Do you need help basting a your Rainbow Log Cabin Quilt?

I've just created a new online quilting class to teach you all the steps to basting quilts of all sizes.

In this quilting workshop, you'll learn about quilt batting, how to prepare the layers of your quilt for basting, and how to baste quilts a baby quilt as well as a king sized quilt.

I also share my favorite new method for basting on a longarm which makes the process so much faster and easier to manage. Many quilt shops are offering rental time on longarm machines so you can rent a few hours and baste several quilts. It's so much faster and much easier than crawling around on the floor!

Going Crazy for Walking Foot Quilting
This past week I also shared the second walking foot quilting video - Crazy Lines. This fun design is very easy to quilt because the lines are spaced completely freeform across your quilt.

I used narrow masking tape as a guide, but you could also mark the lines of the design with fabric marking pens too.

I've gotten some interesting questions on YouTube and Facebook this week along the lines of: "Leah Day is quilting with a walking foot? Why?"

I got curious about walking foot quilting a few years ago. I have watched so many beginners struggle to master free motion quilting that it just made sense to give walking foot quilting a try.

I'm so glad I gave walking foot quilting a chance because it is a much easier style of quilting to begin with. The machine and foot feed the quilt forward and create perfect, even stitches every time.

Piece and Quilt Precut Fabrics with Christa Watson
Hello My Quilting Friends! Today I'm chatting with my awesome quilting friend Christa Watson about piecing and quilting with precut fabrics. This just happens to also be the topic of Christa's new quilting book! Watch the episode below:
Click Here to find Christa's newest book Piece and Quilt with Precuts.

This is a terrific book for slicing into those precut packs you've stashed away so you can turn those nice fabrics into beautiful quilts. Best of all, piecing with precuts can be a lot faster and save you time in the cutting process.

The one downside is you can't prewash precuts and Christa and I talk through how to manage that at the end of the project. Christa doesn't like washing fabrics cut smaller than a fat quarter because they can distort and get weird on the edges. She does wash fat quarters in lingerie bags and that helps contain their tendency to fray on the edges.
New Winter Wonderland Pattern Incoming
Recently I pulled out the Winter Wonderland Quilt Pattern, a pattern I originally wrote in 2010. My writing skills (and quilting math) have both improved a lot over the years, so this pattern is due for a rewrite.

James and I had a photo shoot together this weekend before it got really cold again. He mostly shot pictures of the chickens and cats, but he shot a few of the quilt too.

Working on this has felt a bit like traveling back in time. It also reminded me how much I love this quilt and the unique technique Reverse Shadow Trapunto that's used to create the beautiful blocks.

Be looking forward to this new / old quilt pattern coming back to our quilt shop soon.

So that's it for this week! I hope you're enjoy this cold, calm time of the year and diving into many beautiful quilt projects. I do hope you'll join us for the Machine Quilting Party and learn more about walking foot quilting with me this year.

Let's go quilt,

Leah Day
