Batting, Basting, and Ditching, Oh MY

Published: Wed, 01/24/18

Hi ,

I'm getting lost in rainbows! So many beautiful Rainbow Log Cabin Quilts have been shared to our Facebook Group this week. It's wonderful to see so many quilters piecing this quilt that I had to share some photos with you, .

The first is a knock out log cabin created from solid fabric by Kyona N.:
And here's a really cool version with a mix of prints and colors by Debbie N.:
But please don't feel like you must make a rainbow. Many quilters are substituting other colors to create beautiful quilts. To me, this log cabin looks like a tree from the outside in. This was made by Melissa H.:
Yes, you can still join in the fun and create this log cabin quilt! You can find the pattern in the book Explore Walking Foot Quilting with Leah Day.

Just this week you can save $5 on the ebook version of this book! This is a special discount this week only.

Batting, Basting, and Ditching, Oh MY
With our quilt tops pieced, it's time to pick a batting, get the quilt basted, and begin stitching in the ditch.

But did you know if you picked the right batting, you could skip ditching? That's right - watch this video to learn more:
I shared a very long tutorial along with this video to guide you through setting up your machine for quilting and stitching in the ditch.

How to Quilt Bright Star
So far all of the designs we've learned for walking foot quilting involve straight lines. They are the easiest designs to quilt with a walking foot and they're also the fastest designs to mark.

Click Here to find the tutorial for Bright Star.

In this post I shared a video on quilting this design with walking foot quilting, then an old video from 2009 on how to quilt it with free motion quilting.

Yes, many designs can be quilted with different types of quilting. There isn't a right or wrong way to quilt it so please play around with this and figure out the right way for you.
I also broke my thread a lot in this video which confused a lot of quilters. The reason I didn't travel stitch around the block is because I'm using a super puffy batting and minky backing which is VERY prone to puckers and pleats.

So I have trouble quilting all the way across my quilt block on the bias (diagonal). So I broke thread with each line of quilting and started again from the center.

This is also the way you have to quilt this design on a big quilt and we will be using this design in the Rainbow Log Cabin next week so you'll be able to see what I mean.
Longarm Video Coming this Weekend
Yes, I am loving having my Grace Qnique 14+ on the quilting frame and it's been on my list to shoot videos on this new quilting setup. But then it seemed like everything in the world happened to stop me from sharing the video: too much noise in the house, my son caught a cold, I caught a cold, etc.

Well I finally managed to overcome all these challenges and we will have a new video on machine quilting Stippling on Saturday.

Be looking forward to this new video where I share how to free motion quilt stippling on a home machine and on a longarm quilting frame coming out this weekend.

Don't forget about our sale on the ebook version of Explore Walking Foot Quilting with Leah Day. It's never too late to pick up a copy and learn more about walking foot quilting and join us for the Machine Quilting Party.

Let's go quilt,

Leah Day
