I Can't Believe It's Not Applique

Published: Wed, 01/31/18

Good morning my quilting friend!

, I hope you've had a wonderful start to the year. Our year has kicked off with a bang as we began quilting along with not one, but two quilts at the beginning of the month.

But before I share an update on the Machine Quilting Party, I wanted to share a new / old pattern that is finally coming back to our quilt shop at LeahDay.com.

The Winter Wonderland Quilt is a super special quilt I created in 2009 and finished in 2010, right at the beginning of the Free Motion Quilting Project. It was really designed as an experiment. I wanted to test out using the free motion quilting designs I'd been sharing on the blog, and I wanted to try out a new technique I'd created called Reverse Shadow Trapunto.
This ended up becoming far more than a quilting experiment, it because a gorgeous show-winning quilt!

Just in case you're wondering - no, that's not applique. This is a very different technique that uses craft felt, silk organiza, and beautiful free motion quilting designs to create the snowflakes.

I wrote a quilt pattern on this technique back in 2010, but back then I honestly wasn't a very good writer, and I didn't have any photography skills at all.

We stopped selling this pattern a few years ago and I kept meaning to go back and update it to give it a new look and better photos.
Well, it was finally time to stop putting off this project. This month Josh and I completely rewrote the Winter Wonderland Quilt Pattern together. We have new photos, diagrams, snowflake templates, and more packed into a new 46 page pattern.

Yeah, it's really more of a book now that I think about it!

Ultimate Stippling Quilting Tutorial
I recently realized a lot of my older quilting tutorials on LeahDay.com were looking a little outdated. I've decided to go back in and spice them up with new videos. And what better way to stitch things up a notch, but to also add a new machine to the mix as well!

I'm sharing new Ultimate Quilting Tutorials which feature instructions on quilting a design on your home machine, then on a longarm quilting frame.

Yep, I'm finally ready to show you my very beginner stitching on my Grace Qnique on the Continuum Frame. I'm still learning the basics and still playing around with my camera angles, but I was very pleased with how this turned out.

For this tutorial I shared how to quilt Stippling on a small practice sandwich first (always a good place to start) and then how to quilt on a small baby quilt on your home machine.

Quilting Bright Star in the Rainbow Log Cabin
Welcome back to the Machine Quilting Party where we are learning how to machine quilt with walking foot style quilting. So far we've pieced the big Rainbow Log Cabin quilt together, stitched it in the ditch, and learned how to quilt four walking foot quilting designs.

Today it's time to start quilting our first design, Bright Star into the center of the Rainbow Log Cabin quilt. Learn how to do this step-by-step in this new video:
Click Here to find the Rainbow Log Cabin Pattern in the book Explore Walking Foot Quilting with Leah Day.

The process of quilting from the center of the quilt is challenging. I'm not going to sugar coat it. Most of the bulk of the quilt will be in the arm of your sewing machine or behind the machine.

Walking Foot Quilt Concentric Squares
, I'm seeing squares! It's time to learn our 5th walking foot quilting design and it's all about quilting squares within squares within squares.

Yes, there are a lot of thread breaks, and YES you can do it!

Easy Weave Quilt Pattern
Last week I received an awesome box of quilting fabrics and quickly pieced this Easy Weave Quilt.

Dad and I pieced this quilt top in a single day I absolutely love the effect! The blocks couldn't be easier to piece and cut with strip piecing and it's such a great way to showcase your favorite fabrics.

The best thing is it doesn't matter if your piecing is perfect - all the seams line up in the background so you can get away with murder with this quilt pattern.

Okay... well, maybe not murder, but you get the idea.

Come and learn how to create this Easy Weave Quilt with me today.

This brings us to a close for this week. I truly hope you check out Winter Wonderland and discover the amazing potential of the Reverse Shadow Trapunto technique. Over the years several quilters have written in and shared their photos of their award-winning Winter Wonderlands.

Would love to see what you can do with this pattern, .

Until next week, let's go quilt.
