Did you know there are so many machine quilting styles? There are actually even more methods: walking foot quilting, quilting with stencils, ruler quilting, and pantograph quilting too 😁 Let's dig in and learn all about machine quilting.

How to Start Free Motion Quilting

You can give free motion quilting a try today using any sewing machine you have on hand. Attach a darning foot to your machine and set the stitch length to 0.0 mm or the lowest setting your machine allows.

These settings give you the freedom to move your quilt in all directions - literally freed motion 🌸 and using this method you can quilt any shape your heart desires.

Here's a new free motion quilting tutorial on how to stitch Queen of Hearts, a beautiful design to fill your quilts with love:

I quilted Queen of Hearts first on my Singer Heavy Duty 4432. Quilting on a small square allows you to practice the design without being overwhelmed with a big quilt.

I also quilted this design using a much bigger longarm machine on a quilting frame. Quilting with a machine on frame makes it easier to swing out and make bigger heart shapes. The advantage of frame quilting over push quilting (machine in a table) is that you can easily move the machine with the lightest touch, which is a lot easier on your body.

But understand we all have to start somewhere! It's great to start with the machine you own right now and just give free motion quilting a try to see if you like this quilting style.

What is Groovy Board Quilting?

As I said, when quilting on a frame, it's really easy to move the machine - almost too easy 🤪 It can be harder to feel in control over the machine and stitch consistent designs.

One way to reign in your machine is to lock into a groovy board quilting system like Pattern Perfect. We quilt from the back of our quilting frame, following a groove in the pattern template using a stylus. 

Using the different Pattern Perfect templates allows you to quilt consistent shapes like scallops, zigzags, flowers, spirals, and stars from edge-to-edge across your quilts. 

Yes, you can still wobble a bit (there's a bit of play around the stylus), but this system will absolutely help you stay on track and quilt fun shapes that might otherwise take many quilts to master.

The thing I love most about QCT 6 is it's designed to work so easily with our hoop frames like the Cutie Breeze. 

This is a tabletop quilting frame which means you can store it in a closet, pull it out when you're ready to quilt for a weekend, then put it back in storage when your quilt is complete.

This frame takes up a very small space - it fits on a 24 x 54 inch table - but you can quilt any size quilt. You will need to advance the quilt side-to-side in rows to quilt your entire project. 

It will take more time to quilt across a king sized quilt this way (other frames allow you to quilt across the entire project in one pass), but it's the best way to quilt big projects in a small space.
