Last week I shared about three fun quilting styles: free motion quilting, groovy board quilting, and computerized quilting. This week let's compare two very popular quilting styles:

Ruler Quilting - Using a ruler to guide the quilting design, either by pressing the ruler against a Ruler Foot and guiding the quilt and ruler through the machine (sit down quilting), or guiding the foot against the ruler (frame quilting).

Free Motion Quilting - Quilting the design from memory (freehand quilting), or quilting along lines either marked directly on the quilt fabric or through stencils.

Compare these two different quilting styles in this new quilting tutorial on Matrix:

I quilted Matrix completely freehand with no marks on my Singer Heavy Duty 4432. This is a simple, wiggly grid and very easy to quilt without any visual guidance once you get the hang echo quilting the first curving lines stitched in either direction.

But if you really want perfection... perfect spacing, perfect repeating curves - you can also quilt Matrix using the Super Slide or Mini Slide rulers. You do need to first attach a ruler foot to your machine to safely quilt with rulers.

Please remember that perfection isn't a requirement for your quilts to be finished beautifully! It's really nice to be able to control our quilting design and quilt with precision. But embracing the flow and your unique signature when free hand free motion quilting is also wonderful too.

How to Start Free Motion Quilting

Just in case you missed last week's newsletter, here's a review of how to get started free motion quilting: 

Simply attach a darning foot to your machine and set the stitch length to 0.0 mm or the lowest setting your machine allows.

These settings give you the freedom to move your quilt in all directions - literally freed motion 🌸 and using this method you can quilt any shape your heart desires.

Here's a new free motion quilting tutorial on how to stitch Queen of Hearts, a beautiful design to fill your quilts with love:

I quilted Queen of Hearts first on my Singer Heavy Duty 4432. Quilting on a small square allows you to practice the design without being overwhelmed with a big quilt.

I also quilted this design using a much bigger longarm machine on a quilting frame. Quilting with a machine on frame makes it easier to swing out and make bigger heart shapes. If you're wanting to cover your quilt with large scale hearts, the bigger you can make the shapes, the faster you will secure your quilt and be ready to move on to binding the edges.
