Free Motion Quilting Jagged Lines

Published: Wed, 10/24/12

Hi ,

Have you been missing me? I'm sorry for forgetting to send out the newsletter last week. We took a quick trip to the mountains to see the beautiful leaves changing colors and it turns out wifi is really hard to pick up when you're a mile up!

So this week let's catch up on all that is going on.  First up, we have a great sale going on right now for beginner level books and DVDs in the Day Style Designs Quilt Shop. If you've just decided that you MUST master free motion quilting by Christmas, now is the time to stock up on some great info to help you do just that!

Check out all the books and DVDs on sale right here.

Next, on the Free Motion Quilt Along we've learned two new designs that are both variations on the Flowing Lines design we learned earlier this month.

If you add Paisley within the gaps, you'll create Trapped Paisley, a gorgeous design that will add loads of texture to your quilts, though it might not be the best choice for bed quilts as it tends to get a bit dense.

If you keep the exact same rules as Flowing Lines, but just switch the curvy lines for jagged lines you will get...Jagged Lines.

This open, boxy design will be a great addition to the sashing of any quilt so I also included additional tips on fitting the design in sashing and turning corners with it.

Find both of these videos, plus all 35 other tutorials posted this year to the Free Motion Quilt Along right here.

Getting back to that idea of a quilt being quilted too densely, this week I also shared a post about making quilts soft and cuddly.  Sometimes this means sacrificing the quilting design in an effort to keep the lines of quilting far enough apart to make a softer finish.

But the flip side is without a lot of beautiful stitches holding it together, your quilt might not be secure enough to be drug around the house by the fun toddler lucky enough to receive it!

To find more thoughts on this density question, check out this post right here.

That's it for this week! Make sure to get on your sewing machine and make something beautiful today.

Let's go quilt,

Leah
