How to Quilt Circles and Hide Mistakes

Published: Wed, 02/19/14

HiĀ ,
This month we're rocking through our nine patch blocks with fun, skill building quilting designs! This week Josh and I are tackling circles, which can be a tricky design to mark and quilt, so our videos are full of tips to help make this design easier to master.

To get started, I shared post #7. Quilt Circles in a 9 Patch Block.

All the seam allowances on the back side of the block certainly made marking the circles a chore, so I shared tips on marking the circles using a drafting template instead of a light box.

But what if you don't want to bother marking all the circles on your quilt block? Make sure to watch the part in the video where I show you how to quilt circles free-hand with minimal marking. I also shared a great way to hide circles that aren't quite perfect by filling them with a little spiral:
Josh also quilted Circles in a 9 Patch Block and found the shape a bit challenging. He was moving the block so slowly, but running the machine so fast that he ended up breaking thread in the corner of the block. Make sure to watch Josh's video if you're curious about how to deal with thread breaks and super tiny stitches!

New Free Motion Quilting Designs
In the last two weeks we've learned two new funky designs that will be fun to play with over any type of quilt:
This is Hobbit Holes, a super simple echoing design that will flow quickly over the surface of your quilt. If you stitch this on a big scale it would make a great all-over quilting design for a bed quilt. On a small scale, Hobbit Holes will be a great choice for the background of an applique block.

Our second design is Daisy Chain, the perfect cheerful flowery design for spring:
This edge to edge design will work great in sashing or borders. Any long narrow area will be the perfect spot to stitch this design. Just remember to mark the location of the center of each flower along your starting line so you give each shape enough space to expand.
