How to Piece a Rail Fence Block

Published: Wed, 03/05/14

HiĀ ,
It's the first week of March so it's time to piece a new block for the Building Blocks Quilt Along! This month we're working on a fantastic Rail Fence Block!
Click here to watch the video on piecing this Rail Fence Block.

The great news about this block is it's SUPER easy to piece! There's no matching seams, so the for strips go together super quick.

In fact, all the blocks we've pieced so far are super simple, beginner level designs: a four patch, nine patch, and now this rail fence.

If you haven't joined the Building Blocks Quilt Along yet, now would be a great time to jump in because you only need to piece and quilt 6 blocks to catch up!
This month we will piece and quilt 4 Rail Fence Blocks and learn more fun free motion quilting techniques along the way.

To join the quilt along, all you need is a copy of the Building Blocks Quilt Pattern.

Click here to pick up a printed copy of the pattern.

Click here to check out the download copy. This version will definitely save you some cash on shipping, but you will need to print out all 94 pages yourself.

Remember you can get started on this project at any time and work at your own pace.
The videos we've been sharing will remain online forever, so don't worry about getting a late start. You can find all the videos and posts shared so far for this project right here.

New Double Wedding Ring Class
I absolutely love double wedding ring quilts, and have intended to make one since before Josh and I got married in 2005. We're now getting dangerously close to our 10th wedding anniversary and we still don't have our special quilt!

Luckily Craftsy has recently come out with a new class The Classic Double Wedding Ring taught by Gail Kessler, and I'm finally feeling like making this quilt is a possibility! What I love the most is all the different options covered in this class.
There's three different methods for piecing taught in this class:

Traditional piecing - Cut fabrics using templates, then piece with a 1/4 inch seam allowance to create the quilt top. This method might be a bit old fashioned, but the results sure are pretty!

Paper foundation piecing - If accuracy is your goal, foundation piecing will give you perfect results every time.

Acrylic Templates - Speed up the cutting process and learn how to use acrylic templates to cut your fabrics. The process is a bit different than traditional piecing because you have to piece according to the template instructions, and every one is a little different!

I've had a great time watching these three methods, and I think I'm going to give all three methods a try first to see which one I like best before I jump into piecing my entire quilt.

So if you're like me and have had a double wedding ring on your master list of quilts you MUST make, definitely check out the Classic Double Wedding Ring and save 25% on your class!

Let's go quilt,

Leah Day
