Quilt Zigzags and Basic Star

Published: Wed, 03/12/14

HiĀ ,
We're rolling right along into March and this week I've decided to change things up a bit and share our newest quilting design first. This Basic Star design is sure to be a big hit on your next quilt!

In this video, you'll learn how to quilt this design on a small scale, but what if you wanted to quilt it on a much bigger scale for a bed quilt?

This design is also featured in the Craftsy class Free Motion Fillers Volume 1. In this class, you'll learn how to quilt 50 designs on a larger scale and create a throw quilt at the same time!

Click here to get $20 off this class and join in for only $19.99.
Building Blocks Quilt Along
Last week we learned how to piece a Rail Fence block, which is one of the easiest blocks we will piece together this year. The lack of seams to match makes this a fast block to quilt through no matter what your skill level!

Just in case you haven't joined in yet, you can get started today with the Building Blocks Quilt Pattern. The pattern contains all the cutting and piecing instructions, as well as 42 quilting guides so you can mark you block with the designs like the one above.

Also if you're just getting started, please don't feel like you have to rush to catch up from block #1. This Rail Fence block is actually simpler to piece and will be a great place to start this project too!

This week we've learned how to quilt this block with straight lines and zigzags. Straight lines on top of simple piecing might sound a bit boring, but I think it's an awesome combination!

Josh also quilted this block and had a bit more trouble keeping track of which areas of the block he'd quilted. He had to do a bit more travel stitching in order to knock out all the sections of the block, but it still turned out great.
Josh and I also decided to include a segment of Josh learning how to secure the loose threads on his block using a cheater needle. It took Josh a bit longer to tie off and bury his thread tails, but if you've never done this before, this segment will be really helpful for learning this technique and get an idea of what it will look like if you're right handed like Josh.

Just in case you're looking for it, Click here to find the Spoonflower cheater cloth fabric Josh is using for his blocks.
