We're steadily moving on from the chill of March into the bright sunshine of April. A new month means a new block to piece for the Building Blocks Quilt Along!
Click here to watch video #14 - How to Piece a Modern Building BlockThis modern Building Block is a simple
variation of a 4 patch - four pieces coming together to make a block, only this time all the pieces are different sizes and shapes! Of course, the wonky nature of this block makes it a lot easier and faster to piece because there are no matching seams. Simply piece the two sides together, then run a seam down the middle, and your block will be ready to quilt. Speaking of quilt, how does this modern block look in the finished Building Block Quilt?
This is my finished Building Block Quilt, and you can see how all these beautiful blocks are going to come together in this throw sized project. Yes, you can definitely still join in the fun of this project by picking up a copy of the Building Blocks Quilt Pattern! We also have Building Block Quilt kits available that contain fabric, thread, and tools to make this project easy to jump into at any time. Josh has been pretty busy this week finishing up his Building Block Quilt too, but found time to share an excellent post about color. In the article Your Favorite Quilting Colors Josh has highlighted his favorite colors with beautiful photos of his saltwater fish tanks. So what are your favorite colors to work with? I love working with brighter colors - red, orange, and yellow, but unfortunately my video cameras don't like these colors much, which is why I mostly stick with darker fabrics. Over time it's become my
habit to quilt with white thread over medium to dark fabrics and this has become my usual choices to even when I'm not making videos!
Blazing Spiral Quilting Design
|
Spirals and flame shapes were my inspiration for this funky, flowing design!
Blazing Spiral also came in handy to hide a quilting mistake. I stitched off a marked line on the Peaceful Goddess Cheater Panel and used Blazing Spiral to hide the
mistake! Click here to check out the video and photos on Blazing Spiral.
Hiding mistakes is so much better than ripping them out. By stitching this space with Blazing Spiral, I was not only able to avoid breaking thread, I also filled this hair section with a beautiful design. So that's it for this week! Have fun quilting and
try to find alternatives to ripping out your mistakes. Even the big mistakes can probably be covered or hidden in some way. Be creative and have fun! Let's go quilt, Leah Day |
