Paper Piecing, New Tables, and Dust Busting Tips

Published: Wed, 07/16/14

Hi ,
It's the height of summer and finally time to share a surprise we've been working on for several weeks. It's time to announce - Affordable Sewing Tables are back!

Quilters have been emailing us for years asking about the table I quilt  on at home. I've been using the same table for over 5 years now, so I can definitely say it's a sturdy, dependable table suited for all quilters.

This small, sturdy table offers many features at a great price.
  • Flatbed sewing / quilting surface makes sewing and quilting SO much easier.
  • Easy adjustable flatbed ensures any machine will sit flush with the table top.
  • Super large cut out accommodates all home sewing machines, even the Bernina 830 and Janome Horizon.
  • This table comes with one custom cut insert to fill in the gaps between the cut out and your machine.
  • Rubber wheels for easy transport to workshops.
  • Small table size will fit into any space, or can be expanded easily with folding tables to create a larger surface.

This table, which includes one custom cut insert, costs just $250.00, and ships to you for free!

Note: Unfortunately this price will be increasing in August to $280 so take advantage of the current lower price for both the table and your custom-cut acrylic insert before the cost permanently goes up.

Building Blocks Quilt Along
We are finishing our Disappearing 9 Patch blocks this week with our last set of designs for this fun block, Stippling and Echoes.
If you'd like to "cheat" like Josh, you can pick up the exact same preprinted fabric panels from spoonflower you see in Josh's videos. We offer three different colorways so you're not stuck with the blue and beige Josh is doing for his quilt.

With the Disappearing 9 patch behind us, we're moving on to our Spinning Square blocks.

For this block you also have the option to use a special fabric in the center - a small piece of T-shirt fabric, a decorative embroidery, or a special print. The choice is entirely yours, but do make sure if you're using t-shirt fabric that you stabilize it with interfacing like French Fuse so it doesn't turn into a stretchy mess when we try to quilt it.

Now kick back and enjoy learning how to paper piece this cool block!

In the event you haven't joined in yet, you can get started today with the Building Blocks Quilt Pattern. The pattern contains all the cutting and piecing instructions, as well as 42 quilting guides so you can mark you block with the designs like the one above.

Is your sewing space toxic to your health?
Josh tackles an important and often overlooked subject in fiber art hobbies which may contribute to potential health problems in the long term.

The issue is dust, which is the final result of the invisible particulate fiber matter that becomes airborne whenever fabric is cut and every time a needle strikes the fiber material on your machine. The picture at right is a louvered door leading into our utility room where our furnace/air conditioner is located. That's a solid layer of dust and grime caked on the door from years of heavy sewing machine use and fabric cutting. Note how the slats are far dustier than the frame of the door. This is due to the furnace intake drawing air in, thus making the door a sort of preliminary filter.

Remember, before this junk adheres to a surface, it's suspended in the air, going into your lungs

Hope you have a wonderful week,

Leah Day
