Piecing Fun Modern Blocks & Sawtooth Stars

Published: Wed, 10/01/14

Hi ,
Yay for progress! We're finally finishing up our flooring project today! It's been a huge project, created a lot of disorganization and chaos in our house, but ultimately it's been totally worth it to see the ugly red carpet disappear.

We're celebrating the return to normalcy with a flash sale on one of our most popular DVDs!

This DVD features 30 beginner level designs stitched out clearly into 6" squares. After quilting through each design, you'll learn how to connect all the blocks together to make a cute FMQ Sampler quilt!
Once we run out of these DVDs, we will not be ordering more, so be sure to pick up a copy for your collection while they last! Click Here to Save $15 on this 2 hour free motion quilting DVD
Building Blocks Quilt Along
This week we start a new block, the classic Sawtooth Star. As usual, we begin by learning how to piece this block. Click here for a video on piecing the Sawtooth Star.

This was actually one of the first blocks I ever learned how to piece nearly 10 years ago. I loved the flying geese blocks and basically found any excuse to piece them.

Looking for piecing instructions? Find the cutting, piecing, and quilting instructions for each block in the Building Blocks Quilt Pattern.

We're also going to speed up the posting again and Josh and I will be combining our posts together. We will likely finish posting all the videos in early November, but remember - everything is staying online for you to watch and learn so there's no rush if you're just starting this project!
365 Quilt Wins Viewer's Choice at MQX
I am so happy to announce my 365 Quilting Designs has won two awards at MQX Midwest- a faculty award from Jerry Granata and Viewer's Choice!

To me, these two awards mean so much more than the cash prize ribbons because they were awarded by quilters who love and appreciate this body of work. These awards make me feel thoroughly hugged by the quilting world! It feels like 365 Free Motion Quilting Designs was really appreciated and enjoyed at the show, and I can't wait to send her out again. The problem is - which  shows should I enter?

I honestly don't know anything about competing internationally and would love to learn about quilt shows in other countries. If you know of a big show in your area that you'd like to see 365 compete in, please reply to this email and share!
Modern Block Inspired by Flooring
I've got a craving and only modern quilting can satisfy it! I'm craving simple, free form, non-traditional, improvisational piecing. I also want to work fast with precut fabrics in solid colors. I'm giving myself permission to do all of this and to be a student and experimenter again, not a teacher.

Having looked at floor patterns for hours on end, I was inspired to come up with the very modern design pictured at left.

It seems I can't get enough of wood floors because I'm now considering piecing a wood flooring inspired table runner. I guess if you spend enough time staring at something it eventually becomes inspirational!

New Machine - Juki TL 2010Q
Facebook lit up like a Christmas tree last night when I shared that I'm changing machines! After 4 years, I'm switching back to Juki with the TL-2010Q.

Click here to watch a video about this new machine

The main reason for this switch is physical - I just can't see when stitching backwards on my other machines and would often bend my neck and slump my shoulders in order to see. Sitting in that position for hours has been really bad for my body.

I encourage you to pay more attention to the position and angle you have to sit in at your machine, especially when free motion quilting. How contorted do you have to be in order to see what you're doing?

Rather than focus so much on special decorative stitches or how big the harp space is, I now believe it's far more important to pay attention to the machine body and visibility around the needle. Definitely watch out for that this week and pay attention to how you have to sit at your machine while free motion quilting.
So that's it for this week. Don't forget to check out the sale and save 50% on the Beginner FMQ Fillers DVD!

Let's go quilt,

Leah Day
