Are You Allergic to Raw Edge Applique?

Published: Wed, 01/21/15

HiĀ ,

Yes, I've met many quilter's over the years that seem to have a very strong allergy to raw edge applique! How about you? Do raw edges make you crazy or can you tolerate them in small doses on certain styles of quilts?

I had to ask because this week I've shared a post on Satin Stitching Alternatives which includes the option to leave the edges of your butterflies raw and allow them to fray.
The Dancing Butterfly Quilt Pattern includes plenty of instructions and videos on how to satin stitch the edges of your butterflies, which can add a beautiful texture and added thread color to the surface of the quilt.

But satin stitching is also time consuming and required extra thread and stabilizer. If you're looking to save on time and zoom right ahead to free motion quilting, skipping the satin stitching will definitely make this project faster and easier to manage.

Check out this post on Satin Stitching Alternatives to learn about other options for finishing the edges of your butterflies, or...going RAW!

Dancing Butterfly Supplies in Stock!
We're back in stock on the following products for the Dancing Butterfly Quilt!

Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 - This lightweight fusible web is Leah's preferred fusible web because it's lightweight, fuses easily, is printer friendly!

You can print your butterfly shapes directly on the sheets using an INKJET printer!

Dancing Butterfly Thread Kits - Surround your butterflies with twelve gorgeous colors of Isacord Polyester Embroidery Thread! These colors were specifically picked for their bright, cheerful colors.

Isacord is Leah's preferred thread for applique and free motion quilting because it's very strong, but super thin, so you can easily travel stitch over your designs several times.

Dancing Butterfly Quilt Pattern - It's NEVER too late to join in the fun of the Dancing Butterfly Quilt Along! This 61 page pattern comes with over 7 hours of videos which will guide you through every step of this pattern.

The videos will never expire so you can work on this quilt at your own pace, as fast or slow as you like!

Finishing Duchess Reigns
Sunday evening I finally finished Duchess Reigns, the huge, hand dyed wholecloth quilt I've been working on for several years!
Click Here to watch a video with the last leg of quilting the border and my thoughts after finishing the quilting and hanging her on the wall.

This quilt has certainly been a journey, a challenge, and a learning experience rolled all into one. Overall and overwhelmingly, I love her. I'm so glad I made her. And now I'm ready to go dye more fabric and get her bound and totally finished so she'll be ready to show this year.

Let's go quilt,

Leah Day
