Making Do and Wanting More

Published: Wed, 06/17/15

HiĀ ,

It's been a hot but beautiful week so far, and it's been so nice to get outside--even though most of my outdoor time is spent walking from my back door to my backyard Crafty Cottage!

Sometimes a few quacking friends will watch me from my basement office window and occasionally follow me out to the cottage. Maybe they are trying to tell me they want to learn how to quilt!
Walking Foot Quilting
Before we get into the finishing touches on the Crafty Cottage, I've shared a fun, easy design you can quilt with your walking foot - Echoing.

This is a fun design you can quilt either with a walking foot OR in free motion. I have to admit after echo quilting two blocks with my walking foot that this style of quilting is easier. Nothing beats having the machine feed the quilt for you.

Are you needing a walking foot? We have the perfect set of feet available which covers all of your needs. This set includes a walking foot, 1/4 inch piecing foot, a darning foot designed for low shank sewing machines, and a spool of white Isacord thread plus a spool of white Aurifil thread.
The Crafty Cottage: Organization and Budget
Originally I'd planned to transplant my current quilting setup out to the new cottage with virtually no changes in equipment or furniture.

When I got some of the tables and furniture in the craft room, I realized I would have a 4 inch gap between my tables and the walls and my quilts would easily fall right in that gap and get snagged.

It would also look weird, so this had to be changed! We ended up spending a bit more time building a new table system, but now that it's installed the cottage is set up perfectly for sewing, quilting, and filming videos.

The most important factor about my craft room remodel was staying on budget and on time.

From the beginning of the project, I knew it would cost around $5000 and take about two months of time to convert a prebuilt shed into a fully finished, insulated, painted and carpeted craft space.

During the project, I kept a continual eye on expenses, but didn't have the time to micromanage every single purchase that was made for the rennovation. We ended up going slightly over budget, but the craft room was finished on time and the new space was totally worth the investment.

Introducing the Light Up Your Life Series
I'm happy to announce a brand new Saturday video series which I'm calling Light up Your Life!

This new weekly videocast was born with the completion of my Crafty Cottage. I just wasn't expecting the huge increase in self worth and confidence I would feel after building this space of my own, and I shared a video on my thoughts on this transformation. Please check out my post and video by clicking here, and I would love to know what you think!

I've been wanting to share this way for years, but hesitated and hesitated, and now I'm ready to commit and put my whole heart into this new Saturday Series - Light Up Your Life.

I love sharing about life and the things I've learned and how everything I've gone through has been a step towards a wonderful, fulfilling life. This spring I shared my goddess lecture for the first time at MQX and I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that THIS is what I need to do, THIS is what I need to be sharing.

I hope you enjoyed the post and videos, touring both my old studio space and new, and that you have been inspired in some way to expand your own space. Your craft, your time, your energy has value, and yes, you deserve a beautiful space too.

Let's go quilt,

Leah Day
